Driving around the Cotswolds

IMG_6464

Driving through the Cotswolds offers a unique blend of beauty and challenge. The regions picturesque villages seem frozen in time and there is much beauty to behold. However, some of the roads are narrow and bordered by high hedgerows and ancient stone walls, presenting a new challenge for those who have not driven in the region before.

Despite this, driving through the Cotswolds is an unparalleled experience. Winding through timeless landscapes, drivers and their passengers will encounter sweeping vistas of rolling hills, patchwork fields of colourful crops and secluded valleys with perfectly clear rivers flowing through them.

Moreover, driving yourself allows the freedom to explore at one’s own pace, stopping to admire breath taking views, explore hidden footpaths, or soak up the atmosphere of charming villages. Although challenging, the beauty and serenity of the Cotswolds make the journey worthwhile. Embrace the difficulty, revel in the beauty, and savour every moment of the journey.

Here are our top tips for driving in the Cotswolds:

1. Use the Local Compass app to guide you along a planned route and deliver a plethora of interesting facts, fun stories and local insights along the way.

2. If you are not using the Local Compass app, it’s best to stick to the wider ‘A’ roads rather than attempting to take short cuts through the countryside, where the roads are frequently only wide enough for one vehicle.

3. If you do find yourself on a narrow road with another vehicle coming towards you, both parties will need to use common sense to find a solution. There are dedicated places to pass along most ‘single track’ roads and whoever is closer to one of these should make the effort to move into it, even if it means reversing.

4. If you become lost, stay calm, find a suitable place to pull over and put your hazard lights on to warn other drivers that you are remaining stationary for a few moments. Use a map or navigation device to figure out where you are and how to make it back on track.

5. NEVER come to a complete stop near the exit of a corner, as vehicles may come around it at speed and not have the time or space required to avoid a collision.

6. In the unlikely event of a vehicle break down, immediately put on your hazard lights and do everything you can to create space for other vehicles to pass safely.

7. Always be careful when opening car doors, as other vehicles and pedestrians often pass close by due to the narrowness of the roads and pavements.

8. NEVER stand in the road. Once you have exited the vehicle, move straight to the pavement or another place away from any passing traffic.

9. Always be courteous to other drivers, especially those who move aside for you; a friendly hand gesture goes a along way!

10. If you find yourself driving slowly because you are nervous or lost, that’s fine! You can pull over when it is safe to do so and allow any cars behind you to pass. Take a deep breath, remind yourself how awesome you are and continue on your way when you are ready. Remember not to stop in an awkward place, as this could cause more problems than driving particularly slowly.

Follow these tips and you’ll be absolutely fine!
